BOOM: Stays In (and watches The Oscars)

The couture has been sent to the cleaners, the statues have found homes on extravagant mantle places, and the red carpet has been wrung out and hung up to dry; sadly, ladies and gentlemen, the 87th Oscar’s are finished. While we adored Neil Patrick Harris’ Old Hollywood opening act, and literally jumped out of our chairs and cheered when J.K. Simmons took home Best Supporting Actor, the real highlight of the night came earlier… Everyone knows that half of the draw for the Awards is the looks we see on the red carpet, so BOOM polled some of Calgary’s best trend-setters for who they thought would steal the spotlight. Amidst the sea of scarlet, cherry, and burgundy that seemed to dominate the red carpet this year, a few individuals of stylish notoriety caught- and held- our eye. #4 Marion Cotillard No new-comer to Oscar glory, our favourite petite piaf always stuns, so we were less than surprised to see her in this forward-thinking Dior Couture gown. While it may be a little ahead of its time, we love the art-deco feel and are sure we’ll see inspiration in future hemlines. #3 Rita Ora Rita Ora not only takes our number three spot for best dressed at the Awards, but she also takes a spot in our top five for Stylish Surprises. She departed from her usual street-meets-beat look, and was delightfully elegant and dramatic in midnight blue Marchesa- a sharp juxtaposition for her later, bare-all After Party number… #2 Margot Robbie ‘The Duchess’ just barely missed claiming the throne in a slinky Saint Laurent dress, with a Van Cleef...
BOOM and Friends: Oscar Red Carpet Predictions

BOOM and Friends: Oscar Red Carpet Predictions

The most wonderful time of the year is less than week away; Oscar Season! BOOM will be live-tweeting night of (@boomgoesthedrum), but in preparation for this annual evening of film and fashion we decided to reach out to some of our most style-savvy friends in YYC, and asked them to send us their predictions for who they think will be best-dressed at the Awards. One Red Carpet look will be chosen as the winner (via a completely scientific process which has been developed over the last three decades of red carpet research) by BOOM president, Derek MacDonald. Speaking of Derek, this week he was part of Global Morning News to talk about hosting a standout Oscars Party.  Check out his design tricks for hosting at home! So look no further for your pre-Oscar fix. While we may have a few inklings as to who is most likely to rock it (three votes for Emma Stone- three!), with stars reinventing red-carpet chic like never before, it could be anyone’s game. Sommer Smith – BOOM, Sales and Marketing Manager Love to love her, or love to hate her, Gwyneth is magic.  Her breakups are global news, her BBF is Beyonce, and she makes homemade pasta, yet her thighs do not touch. She will push a product, nurture the next “it” celebrity friendship, preach the detox diet, give a parenting tutorial, but she will never unconsciously or consciously uncouple from her fashion sense.  My prediction is that Gwyneth magic will hit the red carpet once again. Jessica Tkachuk – BOOM, Production Assistant The gentlemen of Hollywood are stepping up their game as of late....
BOOM Goes Out: 3 Things We Loved About The 17th Annual Bill Brooks Benefit

BOOM Goes Out: 3 Things We Loved About The 17th Annual Bill Brooks Benefit

Bill Brooks Benefit for Prostate Cancer January 30, 2015, Hotel Arts Bill Brooks knows parties; he may hold the Calgary record for ‘most parties attended in a single lifetime’ as the Scene Columnist for the Calgary Herald (15 years and still at it!). So, it’s no surprise that his annual gala fundraiser is one of the best tickets in town. There are so many things that make this party great – there are always a great people dressed to the nines and ready to have fun, the room always looks great decked out to an annually changing theme, and there are ALWAYS people on the dance floor to great live music. Here are few of the highlights we were all talking about the next day… THE THEME Bill loves a theme, and so do we (when it’s done correctly!). In this case, choosing ‘Rock-a-Billy’ was perfect. Making the theme approachable meant that more than half of the attendees actually dressed up! Denim, leather, big hair, chucks – it all worked. Most of us have an old-school stampede shirt or high school leather bomber in our closets. At the very least, a great pair of jeans and tight white t-shirt could easily be put together for a James Dean tribute – easy! Derek MacDonald and Alex Kingcott THE TOYS We were so excited to see the use of the Daana Technologies bidding system at this event. Rather than relying on paper bid sheets placed in front of items, stuck to one side of the room, and only visible to people AT the silent auction table, this system allows for electronic bidding from...
BOOM: It’s Valentine’s Day

BOOM: It’s Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, Boom Goes the Drum has been fascinated by the creativity and detail that happens when people are working for a ‘labour of love’. So, three members from our team shared their favourite engagement stories, and what it was that made them so special. General consensus? It doesn’t matter if you are using a colour-coordinated flash mob, or a series of thoughtful notes, a truly amazing love story is all about the details. DEREK I would just like to preface my pick for best wedding proposal by stating that I am a sucker for all wedding proposals. But this one stood out for me for a few reasons: First of all, how did they get Home Depot to agree to let them do this in the lumber section? I will admit it is probably the section that gets the least traffic, but I usually can’t get someone at Home Depot to tell me where the light bulbs are. At the :50 mark you can tell that this goes from amusing to amazing for this guy How did they get access to the giant “Employees Only” step ladder?! Note the use of solid colors on the dancers that I assume is their group of friends. It’s all in the details. You can tell that these guys (and their Family and Friends) just really love each other. And that is, I think, the best reason to do something totally ridiculous and amazing in the middle of a Home Depot.    JESSICA Sometimes, it’s the little things. Even the most stone-hearted Valentine critic will be holding back the...
BOOM Goes Out: Schmancy 2015

BOOM Goes Out: Schmancy 2015

Alex Kingcott  from Shareworthy and Derek MacDonald from Boom Goes the Drum The only Calgary fundraiser to make the national ‘Top 6 most influential fundraisers’ list in Maclean’s 2014 POWER Issue is Schmancy, presented by The Glenbow Museum. The article mentioned that the event raises funds for the largest non-profit museum of it’s kind in Western Canada (The Glenbow) and that it considers itself a ‘non-gala’ gala (which we agree with – the relaxed vibe at Schmancy is a unique achievement). What they neglected to mention, is Schmancy’s fabulous style… After four years on the boards, we think Schmancy has become the only social event in the city where you can take style risks. There is no theme, per se, but self-expression and individuality are fundamental and requisite for attendees – look great, feel great, and take fashion risks. Below: Schmancy co-chair Katrina Olson @KatrinaOlson Vincent Law Aldona Baurtowicz 2015 was a real treat for the Boom Goes The Drum team because we were able to attend this year’s event as guests, to enjoy the extraordinary artistic talent assembled for the keynote presentation and roam Calgary’s most stylish after party, winding through the four levels of the Glenbow’s expansive collections. Top and Middle: Derek MacDonald, Bridal Expo’s Lenora Kingcott, Alex Kingcott, Jessica Tkachuk and Andrew Smith. Bottom: Derek MacDonald and Michelle Lazo Derek MacDonald, Franca Dejong, Madelyn Lang, and Cynthia Moore For this year’s keynote, we were greeted by the effervescent Jessi Cruickshank (MTV, ETalk), who opened the evening’s discussion by asking this question: how have arts and culture made you who you are today? Two artists currently impacting...
