BOOM Goes Out: Martinis & Music by Calgary Opera

We are so fortunate to work with people who are wonderful and at the top of their game like Alex Kingcott of Shareworthy Content Lab.  Alex(@AlexKGT) is always giving us the inside scoop and is our guest contributor for BOOM Goes Out: Martinis & Music by Calgary Opera.  Take it away Alex! Calgary Opera has had a big year (so far). Just a few weeks ago it was announced that Calgary Stampede would be partnering with Calgary Opera to reveal a new rehearsal/performance space on the Stampede Grounds. Plus, they have a huge season upcoming with Carmen this April. Last week, they welcomed some Calgary Opera fans to their current home at the Arrata Opera Centre for a Martinis & Music: An evening with Rebecca Caine. If you don’t know Rebecca Caine, I instruct you to immediately leave this blog and google her. She created the role of “Cosette” in Les Miserables (which she lovingly referred to as the most hated soprano part in theatre) and was the replacement for Sarah Brightman in the original London cast of Phantom of the Opera. Her concert spanned centuries of west end divas and including all of Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera hits (unlike many other divas of her caliber, she freely performed the highlights of her incredible career and sounded better than ever!), but it was her stories that made the evening truly spectacular. From her strategies for making Michael Crawford feel taller to the feelings she felt seeing Andrew Lloyd Webber in the audience for the first preview of Les Miserables (which at the time ran 40 minutes...

BOOM Goes Out: #Bella2015

In my opinion there is nothing more fashionable than supporting a great cause which is exactly what several hundred of Calgary’s most fashionable elite did last night at the 2nd annual Bella Fashion Show Presented by Holt Renfrew, and they all looked great doing it too. In it’s second year, Bella 2015 is tagged as the “hottest fashion event of the season” and it is apparent why; the most stylish crowd of fashionistas/fashionistos descended on Holt Renfrew in a show of support for the Foothills Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In their words – “1 in 8 babies born at the Calgary Foothills Medical Centre require the care of the NICU and the $500,000 raised last night will go towards buying desperately needed equipment for the NICU to help give the best chance possible for the fragile beginnings of these tiny patients lives.” A cause worth supporting for sure. The evening began with a “magenta carpet VIP reception” and delicious food from Hotel Arts and wine from Willow Park Wine and Spirits were all in high supply. As an interesting twist on the challenge of live programming in an unconventional setting, a live telecast was filmed from several locations on different levels of the Holt Renfrew Calgary retail space and broadcast throughout the venue on screens. As a technical side note, this Event Producer was impressed by the logistics of this live programming feat. Guests were asked to take their seats about 2 hours into the evening and that is when the real show began. With a spectacular Carmen inspired prelude performance by both Calgary Opera and the Alberta Ballet the show...
BOOM Goes Out: The Black and White Ball

BOOM Goes Out: The Black and White Ball

The provocative and newly annual Black and White Ball has been revived in high style by Decidedly Jazz as their flagship fundraiser. The Decidedly Jazz Fundraiser was originally hosted at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel, but its rumoured the party was seen as simply being too wild and for the upscale atmosphere of one of Calgary’s most opulent venues.  A few years later, and popular demand resulted in last night’s return of one of Calgary’s most standout events. The Ball and White Ball left us buzzing and possibly a little limp from too much ‘jazz hands’! Set on the first and second floors of the decadent Fairmont Palliser Hotel, guests enjoyed fabulous jazz bands, delicious bites, a silent auction, and (a personal BOOM highlight) impromptu dance performances by the talented members of Decided Jazz Danceworks. To support Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, follow the link here!  Calgary socialites never shy away from a chance to support local arts and culture- or to step out on the town in style. Guests were out in full-fashion-force, in a mixture of New-Orleans jazz age and ballet inspired ensembles. Feathers everywhere, and- of course- almost exclusively in black and white....
