Red Carpet to YYC: Oscar Fashion for Local Events

Red Carpet to YYC: Oscar Fashion for Local Events

It’s well known that red carpet events, like the Oscars, serve as inspiration for the succeeding year’s runway trends, and particularly event-fashion – especially weddings! This is just one of many reasons the Boom team have always been avid students of the Academy’s style; the pieces that make their way up and down that much-lauded scarlet rug will undoubtedly shape the look and feel of what people want to wear to events, and- by proxy- the feel and fashion of the events themselves. To give you a local angle, we spent an afternoon with Boom friend and muse, Lauren Barrie of The Nobles Model Management, trying on some Oscar-worthy attire at Holt Renfrew to see what sort of looks will translate well from the red carpet to YYC events!        ...

Boom and Friends: Oscars Red Carpet Predictions 2016

Boom and Friends: Oscars Red Carpet Predictions 2016

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, people! It’s Oscar season, a precious moment when the Boom team comes together with our friends to celebrate cinema and red carpets on one fabulous evening. This year, we’ll be spread across the city at star-studded viewing parties (Lori will be checking out Theatre Calgary’s Night with the Stars and CIFF is also throwing a cool shindig) and home-grown gatherings, but we’ll all be watching. While everyone makes their picks for who will take home little gold men, we’ve gathered some guesses on who will win the red carpet. Thanks to all these fashionable folks for participating! Stay tuned to our Twitter, Instagram and Facebook on Oscar Sunday (this Sunday!) to follow along with us, and following the awards to see our top picks for best dressed. Happy Academy-ing you to all. See you Sunday!     My prediction for best dressed at this year’s Oscar’s number one is Cate Blanchett– love her, love her elegance and grace. She has a je ne sais quoi that no one can compete with. Her nomination for best actress for her role in Carol has been pivotal to her career and I guess the only question is… will she wear an Armani Gown or tailor pant suit. Cate has a long standing relationship with the Armani fashion house as she has been the $10 million dollar face of his the fragrance “Si”. I adore her classic beauty and she never disappoints on the red carpet. Second runner up to her will of course be Rooney Mara, Cate’s best supporting actress in Carol with something unexpected and darkly romantic. The unexpected new...
5 Last-Minute Valentine’s Day Ideas in Calgary

5 Last-Minute Valentine’s Day Ideas in Calgary

It happens to all of us at one point in our lives. You wake up one mid-February morning and, as you begin drinking that first cup of coffee, you find yourself staring in horror at last night’s flyer for a Valentine’s special courtesy of your local florist. Next thing you know you’re frantically searching for a restaurant with an open table and praying something other than Transformers is playing at the theatre. Don’t worry. We’ve all been there and, single or taken, we’ve taken the guesswork out of surviving (and maybe even enjoying) Valentine’s Day this year!   1.Book that Last-Minute Reservation A great dinner is a tried and true way to celebrate the day of love; it takes out the hassle of cooking and gives you an excuse to dress up. If you’re worried about finding a reservation this late in the game, don’t be- Open Table has a comprehensive list of all Calgary restaurants that still have space! Click Here for bookings.     2. Hit the slopes! A great date idea or a fun and unique way to meet another single, Mount Norquay is hosting a fantastic Lifts of Love event, featuring some time on the hills and an Après Ski Mixer with a DJ! Click Here for details!   3. Find Amore at the Famer’s Market There’s nothing quite like spending a Sunday afternoon wandering the Calgary Farmer’s Market, eyeing the brightly coloured produce, inhaling the scent of fresh baked bread… There’s something inherently romantic about the whole thing. Add a dueling piano performance, a photo booth, and the chance to make a fruit-flower valentine (we don’t know, but we’re...
Boom Goes Out: Schmancy 2016

Boom Goes Out: Schmancy 2016

This past weekend the Glenbow Museum celebrated their 50th anniversary and ushered in another year of local and international art and history with their annual event, Schmancy. As the museum’s largest fundraiser, Schmancy easily pulls in over 800 guests enticed by the opportunity to witness the evening’s evocative programming and catering, and who want to participate in Calgary’s art-world, either through the much-anticipated ART PARK silent auction, or by browsing the Glenbow’s travelling and permanent exhibitions- the largest art collection in Western Canada. Night of the event, VIP Dinner guests were treated to a highly catered, multi-course meal that left us overwhelmingly impressed. From the gracious wait staff who seemed to anticipate your needs before you realized them yourself, to the inspired concoctions that graced our plates, our hats are tipped to Hotel Art‘s chef, Jan Hansen, who also ensured that general guests enjoyed a range of canapés that didn’t disappoint. Boom was delighted to spend some of the evening with Calgary couture designer and current Glenbow Artist-in-residence, Paul Hardy, whose Kaleidoscopic Animalia exhibit is on display at the museum. Well known for the way his clothing beautifully uses- and is inspired by- the natural world, Hardy’s exhibit is an unsurprisingly thoughtful examination of the relationship between humanity and animals.  Besides lining the walls and stages of the Glenbow, many of Hardy’s pieces were also seen bedecking Schmancy’s more discerning attendees. Schmancy encourages attendees to “. . . be as fancy as you want,” and Calgarians embraced this invitation with open arms. Canadian fashion icon and previous host of Fashion Television, Jeanne Beker, flitted through the well-heeled crowd, spotting and interviewing guests...
