Canada Day Hosting in Calgary

Canada Day Hosting in Calgary

Tomorrow is Canada Day. Our beautiful country will be 149 years old. Global TV Calgary invited us to talk DIY Canada Day party hosting, so Boom’s Jessica Tkachuk dropped by with some ideas and inspiration. Three elements of successful party hosting: Hospitality Food & Beverage Decor & Entertainment Hospitality We’ll start with hospitality. Canadians are known for it, and for good reason! The most important thing to remember: your guests want to enjoy YOU. Being a good host means doing all the prep ahead of time so you can enjoy their company and be present. To make sure you can do that, follow these tips: Be clear with your invite: remove the guess work for your guests by being clear in the invite when they should arrive, what they should wear, if children/guests are welcome, and if they should bring anything. Big one: ask in advance if there are any dietary restrictions you should be aware of. Enlist some help: you cannot be everywhere at once, but small jobs spread around make the work more pleasurable and the party more inclusive. Assign someone to door/coat/shoe duty, someone to making sure glasses remain full, someone to bus/refresh dishes, etc. Know your audience: Do the guests all know each other or will introductions be required? Are kids coming? Are there allergies you can prep for? A little research up front will limit surprises! Food & Beverage We went for a coast-to-coast Canada Day menu (and all around the city!), including colourful and easy-to-eat kabobs using Alberta beef and fresh veggies from the Calgary Farmer’s Market. When it comes to event food, we’re...

Event in Review: SocialWest

Project Brief: Assist social star Mike Morrison to present the largest social media and digital marketing conference on the prairies over three days in a legendary Calgary cinema. SocialWest, a new conference from Mike Morrison, welcomed over 400 professionals into The Globe Theatre last week to talk social media, communications, and digital marketing. More than that, it achieved something special: it made ‘The Conference’ cool again. When one thinks of ‘traditional’ social media masters and digital masterminds, one conjures images of geeky, anti-social computer nerds. In fact, the ecosystem of social media marketing is made up of enthusiastic, engaging, and energizing individuals eager to connect, learn, and expand their networks. Can you imagine a better environment and atmosphere for growth? Take it from us, it was a fabulous way to learn and meet new people. *Photo Credit: Neil Zeller Photography Boom Goes the Drum was able to collaborate with Mike from the conference’s conception, and were able to project manage the multiple layers of production: Registration Staffing Venue Management Production Budgeting Project Management It was a joy to see the project come to life – and sell out weeks in advance – and experience the event with the incredible calibre of professionals it attracted.   The result: A sold out conference that attracted 400 attendees from as far as the NWT and major brands like Facebook, Twitter, and Airbnb. Attendees also got to hear from homegrown social star Kelly Oxford (who stuck around to sign copies of her NYT best-selling book). Social impressions for the event were in the tens of millions – trending nationally within hours of opening. There was also...

Event in Review: GOLF2016

Bring it on – you’ll be unlikely to beat GOLF2016 for ‘Hottest Golf Event in Calgary’. This week, more than 160 golfers joined us for GOLF2016 in support of Contemporary Calgary, and hit the greens in 30 degree heat (you read that right!) on the hottest day of the year. After a hearty lunch on the grass, our golfers headed out to golf 18 holes at the beautiful Elbow Spring Golf Club – well prepared with sunblock and cool drinks. They were all over it! In fact, the event sold out for the first time this year – six weeks in advance! The level of enthusiasm for the event and the cause was remarkable. And it’s no wonder: Contemporary Calgary has had a massive year! Just a few of the major milestones… The City of Calgary has committed $24.5 million to the renovation of the Centennial Planetarium for the purposes of creating a permanent home for Contemporary Calgary. LOOK2015, which Boom helped to produced in November of last year, raised a remarkable $1 million in a single night. The organization has hired it’s first leader: Pierre Arpin was announced as Director & CEO.   *Below Photo Credit: LeBlond Studio       The evening concluded with a well-earned meal, prizes for top (and bottom) scores, and a rousing live auction led by Contemporary Calgary’s Board Chair, Jay Mehr (Shaw Communications). Items up for bid included exclusive on-the-field experiences at the Gregcup, beach getaways, and impossible-to-find bottles of wine from Highlander Wine & Spirits. In the end, the event surpassed it’s fundraising goal by more than 20%. Massive thanks to the sponsors,...

Boom Goes Out: Dinner x Design 2016

Last night, 500 guests gathered at ACAD to celebrate design and the designers whose chops are putting Calgary on the map. Dinner x Design came to town this week, giving 9 designers/agencies the chance to create unique table-scapes that demonstrate their creativity and personality. The event concludes this evening with a special dining event that invites guests to enjoy the tables and a meal with the people who created it. Funds raised will support Contemporary Calgary and ACAD. Bravo #Calgary – the work in this room is outstanding. These are just a few peaks, more tomorrow! #dxdyyc #dxdcgy #dinnerxdesign #yyc #yycdesign #yycevents A video posted by Boom Goes The Drum (@boomgoesthedrum) on Jun 2, 2016 at 9:58pm PDT Present at the event were: Alykhan Velji Design ID Bohemia WW Design Studio Sarah Ward Interiors e=mc2 events LeAnne Bunnell Interioros Nyla Free Designs Corea Satropa Designs Amanda Hamilton Design Rochelle Cote Design There were also drinks and treats throughout the event, and lots of fashionable friends! A warm room filled with eye candy.  Spoke with one designer who said that they approached this event with complete freedom creatively. She said she took the opportunity to create something just for them – no clients or briefs or restrictions. We loved that. How rare is it to be given a stage to express whatever story it is you want to tell to room full of people who want to listen. Bravo!  Tonight, Boom’s Derek Macdonald will join Amanda Hamilton (Amanda Hamilton Design) at her table – a modern, Calgary-centric souk – to take part in a discussion the love affair between art, design,...
