The most wonderful time of the year is less than week away; Oscar Season! BOOM will be live-tweeting night of (@boomgoesthedrum), but in preparation for this annual evening of film and fashion we decided to reach out to some of our most style-savvy friends in YYC, and asked them to send us their predictions for who they think will be best-dressed at the Awards. One Red Carpet look will be chosen as the winner (via a completely scientific process which has been developed over the last three decades of red carpet research) by BOOM president, Derek MacDonald.
Speaking of Derek, this week he was part of Global Morning News to talk about hosting a standout Oscars Party. Check out his design tricks for hosting at home!
So look no further for your pre-Oscar fix. While we may have a few inklings as to who is most likely to rock it (three votes for Emma Stone- three!), with stars reinventing red-carpet chic like never before, it could be anyone’s game.
Sommer Smith – BOOM, Sales and Marketing Manager
Love to love her, or love to hate her, Gwyneth is magic. Her breakups are global news, her BBF is Beyonce, and she makes homemade pasta, yet her thighs do not touch. She will push a product, nurture the next “it” celebrity friendship, preach the detox diet, give a parenting tutorial, but she will never unconsciously or consciously uncouple from her fashion sense. My prediction is that Gwyneth magic will hit the red carpet once again.
Jessica Tkachuk – BOOM, Production Assistant
The gentlemen of Hollywood are stepping up their game as of late. Benedict Cumberbatch stunned in the eloquent and provoking ‘Imitation Game’ this past year, and his performance on screen seems a reflection of his equally dazzling style off-screen. Below we see Mr. Cumberbatch at the 2014 Met Gala, decked out in the mandated white tie theme. As the only attendee to get Queen Wintour’s official thumbs up (her exact words were “nailed it”), my money is on this British brooder.
Alex Kingcott– Shareworthy Content Lab, President
I choose Emma Stone, because anyone can make the best dressed list in a gown but few can rock it in a pantsuit with a bow on the bum.. Emma’s movie is up for some serious accolades, so everyone must be scrambling to dress her. She will have her pick of the litter, and with the way her season has gone so far, I won’t be surprised if she makes another bold choice: to go complete elegant Hollywood glam.
Paul Hardy – Paul Hardy Design, Owner and Designer
Emma Stone consistently makes bold style choices that are both progressive and sophisticated. Aside from her diversity, the aspect I appreciate most about Emma’s style is that the intention of her looks are fully realized by the attention to detail in selecting the perfect hair, makeup, shoes and accessories. She never appears over styled and always seems to present herself in a way that appears effortless. In the words of Beyonce ‘I Jus woke up like Dis!’
Courtney Kos – Ette, Owner
Emma Stone never has a bad red carpet moment. She has what I think is the perfect balance between fashion-forward playfulness and elegant, timeless style. 2015 is her first Oscar nomination, so I think she is going to “bring it” like she never has before.
Kat Marks – Kat Marks, Owner and Designer,
Patricia Arquette. Why? Rebellious and independent style, Patricia Arquette holds her own with out comprise. She wears what she wants, when she wants in an unforgiving, classic style. Plus, I think she is uber, uber cool.
As much as I love Reese, and I think she can pull off a red carpet look effortlessly, I am going to put my money on Keira Knightley this time around. Keira has a natural presence that’s suitable for couture fashion. In my opinion, she displays a unique and a timeless-elegant persona. In addition, Keira’s figure and beautiful features make her look good in almost any dress.
Lenora Kingcott – Calgary Bridal Expo, Owner
I’m always looking for Dame Helen Mirren on the red carpet. She is the perfect example of how women-of-a-certain age (Helen is 69) can be totally on trend without falling victim to fashion. She is an expert at showing off her best assets, and yet she doesn’t get stuck on one silhouette, simply because it works. If you are going to be a Mother-of the-Bride or Groom this summer, Google Helen’s red carpet portfolio; there’s something for everyone. And to all of the young and beautiful starlets in the red carpet next weekend, I say, check out Helen for inspiration. She’ll show you how it’s to be done in years to come.
