Last Thursday, Oct. 22, Calgary’s fashion crowd sat eagerly within the white walls of Studio 122, waiting for another taste of emerging designer Nina Kharey’s bold, clean designs that are quickly making her brand, House of Nonie, a local (and national) favourite.
This is not the first time the BOOM team has touted House of Nonie as one-to-watch; in our coverage of PARKSHOW2015 earlier this spring, we noted that House of Nonie’s display was almost obscured by a perma-crowd of enchanted shoppers gathered in front (of which BOOM was most certainly a part). No that we’re surprised- having been mentored by Barbara Atkin of Holt Renfrew, Nina seems to have a firm grasp on what it takes to stand out amidst the clamor or young artists vying for attention, and her collection speak for itself.
Simplistic shapes with bold cuts, minimal and architectural; Nina’s peices, much like the designer herself, seem to evoke a sophisticated yet unpretentious aura. The show itself was an elegant reflection of this aesthetic, taking place in Studio 122’s blank-canvas warehouse space in the SE.
