10 Reasons you NEED to be at LOOK2015

10 Reasons you NEED to be at LOOK2015

November 7 marks the return of Contemporary Calgary‘s much anticipated annual fundraiser, LOOK. A hub for culture changers, style savantes, and creative aficionados, this evening of interactive installations and live art is an event for the art of our time. Here’s why you can’t afford to miss out: 1) The art! Contemporary Calgary is one of Canada’s leading galleries for modern and contemporary art, bringing a range of house-hold and in-the-know names to Calgary. Inspiration and wonder will dress the walls of this event. Come with eyes (and imagination) wide open. 2) The building! Contemporary Calgary is moving into the previously uninhabited Centennial Planetarium. An expansive mass of stunning, modern architecture, this venue is going to be the perfect host for the poignant art “C” is known for curating. You won’t want to miss witnessing this raw work in progress. 3) The fashion! This is an art party; no time for fashion wallflowers. Rather than bringing out your LBD standby, take a page out of Mr. Marc Jacob’s book and remember that fringe (as seen on the lovely Ania, above), lamé, and sequins are always a good idea. 4) The auction! Featuring both a silent and live art and experience auction, this rousing experience was a definite highlight from last year. Once-in-a-lifetime trips and jaw-dropping works of art will be up for grabs, hosted by the charismatic auctioneer, Stephen Ranger. 5) The Gopnik! No, Adam Gopnik is not a verb, but as one of the most prolific cultural writers of our time  he may as well be. VIP ticket holders of LOOK2015 will be treated to cocktails, canapés,...
How to do Bridal Expo like a Wedding Planner

How to do Bridal Expo like a Wedding Planner

Every September the Calgary Bridal Expo provides an opportunity for Brides-to-be to take in all the best that the wedding industry has to offer. Over 150 of Alberta’s leading wedding industry professionals descend on the BMO center for one afternoon. This is like a dream scenario for anyone that has just undertaken the task of planning a wedding. Having all that the province has to offer under one roof is a great opportunity to not only see what is out there but also it’s a chance to meet the people who will be responsible for helping you make your dream wedding a reality. I like to think of it as speed dating your suppliers. There are a couple of ways to do the show. The first being to simply take it all in and feel inspired by immersing yourself in all the beautiful possibilities. But if you are Type-A, like me, you probably have a very specific list of what you need to accomplish in those few short hours (and believe me, you can get A LOT accomplished). So it is to you, the task oriented go-get-‘em types like me, that I present my tips on how to do Bridal Expo like a wedding planner: Game plan Having a game plan makes all the difference. I like to call it planning to plan. I suggest determining your objectives for the day, ie., Getting options for invites, taste the dessert samples to narrow down your choices or even meet the planners the you have been snooping on the internet. Whatever your list is, come prepared to knock things off of...
BOOM Goes Out: Packwood Grand

BOOM Goes Out: Packwood Grand

Twelve hundred of Calgary’s most cultured and fashion forward patrons found themselves donning wide-brimmed, St. Tropez-inspired hats, and cool, airy cravats as they walked the red carpet for the second annual Packwood Grand. A standardbred racing event produced by Tyler Rygus, Cory Edwards, and BOOM friend, Katy Bond, Packwood has been hailed as a “… celebration of old world leisure and sophistication”. Judging by the well-shod and artfully styled guests and event venue respectively, we’d have to say we’re in agreement. For a second time, Packwood has made what was old new again, and coyly charmed Calgarians into enjoying a day of forgotten pleasures and refinement.   Boquet Finale | This year’s best dressed @swervinsterzik @aniab thanks to our judges @styleista_ca @jasonkrell @alyvelji And @crossiron_mills #yyc #ADayAtTheRaces #packwoodgrand A photo posted by Packwood Grand (@packwoodgrand) on Jul 1, 2015 at 3:24pm PDT With a shot, the beautifully groomed standardbreds were off, red dust flying in the cool afternoon breeze as guests watched breathlessly, intently following their favourites around the track. Watching the track was delightful, but watching the attendees was perhaps even more so- as event producers, it was a true treat to see a crowd so completely engaged in an event experience. It’s hard to know who stole the show for the day; the horses, or the volumes of paper roses and explosions of brightly coloured feathers that bedecked the crowd at every turn. Packwood famously includes a style competition- complete with awards- and Calgarians did not disappoint. Haute Couture & High Stakes | This is what it’s all about. Five Unique Wedding Venues in Calgary

Five Unique Wedding Venues in Calgary

Choosing a venue is one of the most important, and sometimes stressful part of planning a wedding. A venue will be the starting point for the tone you are trying to set for your day. And It will not only act to set the stage but the venue can often become somewhat of a character itself. But not all venues are created equal. Shortlisting possible locations is only the first step in a long process of research and decision making. Here are a few things to keep in mind when starting your search: 1) Have an idea of numbers of guests: Its a good idea to sit down early on and build a list of possible guests. It will help you save time by not visiting the venues that won’t fit your numbers. 2) Have a general idea of the format that you are thinking about. Lots of couples nowadays opt for a more casual approach to their celebration. So if a traditional sit down dinner feels a bit formal for you, then start by looking at places that can accommodate a standing dinner or lounge style reception. 3) Most venues book out anywhere from 8 months to two years if they are popular. As a rule of thumb starting to look 12 months out is typically safe to still have plenty of options. 4) Be thorough in asking questions of the venue and read the fine print before signing a contract. Venues often have strict policies around what they will allow. For example if you want to bring in your alcohol the venue may charge you corkage. Or...

BOOM Goes Out: Monogram Dinner x Design

If you’re design nerds like we are, you’ve been watching the news feeds of lucky attendees at DxD events in Vancouver and Toronto for years. Finally, Calgary got her chance to shine last night at ACAD, and shine she did. The Social Concierge (known in Calgary for events like Diner en Blanc and Packwood Grand) presented the first annual DxD with 6 incredible designers. Designers included were: Amanda Hamilton, Nyla Free Designs, Corea Sotropa Designs, Sally Healy Design, Connie Young Design, Alykhan Velji Designs, Uniquities, and ID Bohemia. “Monogram Dinner by Design brings together internationally celebrated designers and local talent to create three-dimensional dining installations that awe, inspire and delight. These extraordinary dining environments — from the lavish and romantic to the outrageous and whimsical — set the stage for two days of fun and fascination.”  – Website Those tables tho… @dinnerxdesign @acadexperience #yycliving #socialites #creative #design #inspiring #art @jenntait @terisalazar @lbarbetti #dxdcgy #dinnerxdesign A photo posted by Al Farrell (@naveed7) on Jun 11, 2015 at 10:27pm PDT   The reveal of the intricate and innovative dinner-scapes took place last night with a vibrant cocktail party. Tonight, the celebration will continue with an exclusive dinner. Each table will host 10 guests for a truly special dinner experience. The evening supported ACAD and Contemporary Calgary – two incredibly worthy artistic institutions – but the real winners were the designers. We are a blessed city to be surrounded by this much creative talent.       This evening. Finding Your Wedding Style

Finding Your Wedding Style

This weekend I was invited by Ette to be part of the Inbal Dror Couture 2015 Brunch & Fashion Show. We were talking wedding style and I wanted to put pen to paper on how we at Boom Goes The Drum approach a couple’s wedding style and building it into the vision of what their special day will look and feel like. When I say ‘style’ I don’t mean your personal style, although it is an important influence.  The style that I am talking about is all of the decisions you make in your planning process and how they will translate into the more subtle aesthetics of your wedding.   Call it your aesthetic, your design, or vibe, however you describe it is, it is all the little details that create the memories of your wedding for you and your guests. The things that resonate long after your wedding. I am going to give you a snapshot of some of the steps we use in our creative process.  Our design team develops a quite a few documents and the reason is to get all of the information out of your head and into documents that then drive the process.  We compile a: • Design Brief • Story Board of the design • Mock ups and sketches and samples • Style guide (for your Bridal Party/Guests) • Floor plans, logistics docs, production schedule, etc The most important starting point is the Design Brief and it usually is only a sentence, maybe two, and it speaks directly to what we are trying to achieve from a design standpoint. It is basically a...
