Canada Day Hosting in Calgary

Canada Day Hosting in Calgary

Tomorrow is Canada Day. Our beautiful country will be 149 years old. Global TV Calgary invited us to talk DIY Canada Day party hosting, so Boom’s Jessica Tkachuk dropped by with some ideas and inspiration. Three elements of successful party hosting: Hospitality Food & Beverage Decor & Entertainment Hospitality We’ll start with hospitality. Canadians are known for it, and for good reason! The most important thing to remember: your guests want to enjoy YOU. Being a good host means doing all the prep ahead of time so you can enjoy their company and be present. To make sure you can do that, follow these tips: Be clear with your invite: remove the guess work for your guests by being clear in the invite when they should arrive, what they should wear, if children/guests are welcome, and if they should bring anything. Big one: ask in advance if there are any dietary restrictions you should be aware of. Enlist some help: you cannot be everywhere at once, but small jobs spread around make the work more pleasurable and the party more inclusive. Assign someone to door/coat/shoe duty, someone to making sure glasses remain full, someone to bus/refresh dishes, etc. Know your audience: Do the guests all know each other or will introductions be required? Are kids coming? Are there allergies you can prep for? A little research up front will limit surprises! Food & Beverage We went for a coast-to-coast Canada Day menu (and all around the city!), including colourful and easy-to-eat kabobs using Alberta beef and fresh veggies from the Calgary Farmer’s Market. When it comes to event food, we’re...

Boom Goes Out: Dinner x Design 2016

Last night, 500 guests gathered at ACAD to celebrate design and the designers whose chops are putting Calgary on the map. Dinner x Design came to town this week, giving 9 designers/agencies the chance to create unique table-scapes that demonstrate their creativity and personality. The event concludes this evening with a special dining event that invites guests to enjoy the tables and a meal with the people who created it. Funds raised will support Contemporary Calgary and ACAD. Bravo #Calgary – the work in this room is outstanding. These are just a few peaks, more tomorrow! #dxdyyc #dxdcgy #dinnerxdesign #yyc #yycdesign #yycevents A video posted by Boom Goes The Drum (@boomgoesthedrum) on Jun 2, 2016 at 9:58pm PDT Present at the event were: Alykhan Velji Design ID Bohemia WW Design Studio Sarah Ward Interiors e=mc2 events LeAnne Bunnell Interioros Nyla Free Designs Corea Satropa Designs Amanda Hamilton Design Rochelle Cote Design There were also drinks and treats throughout the event, and lots of fashionable friends! A warm room filled with eye candy.  Spoke with one designer who said that they approached this event with complete freedom creatively. She said she took the opportunity to create something just for them – no clients or briefs or restrictions. We loved that. How rare is it to be given a stage to express whatever story it is you want to tell to room full of people who want to listen. Bravo!  Tonight, Boom’s Derek Macdonald will join Amanda Hamilton (Amanda Hamilton Design) at her table – a modern, Calgary-centric souk – to take part in a discussion the love affair between art, design,...

5 Cool Ideas for Canada Day Hosting at Home

July 1st is a home entertaining jem!  Whether you are basking in the sun on a condo balcony or kicking it in the backyard, Canada Day, is an ideal opportunity to host family and friends.  This national holiday is big on patriotism, but should be minimal on hard labour hosting.  We have found some quick hosting ideas that will make your guests feel at home and proud to be Canadian! Our, Derek MacDonald, was on Global News Morning today to talk about these ideas and more on how to host a standout Canada Day Bash.  Be The Lazy Gourmet Here at Boom we love food and some of us even cook (ok, maybe just one of us), but cooking and hosting can sometimes cause a time management problem with you in the kitchen when you should be cracking open a micro beer on the deck.   Canada Day is the perfect occasion to be the lazy gourmet with a grab and go menu that can be picked up from a high quality purveyor like Sunterra and only requires a grill, warm up, or simply put it in your own serving dish. Red, White, and Floral Since this celebration is in your home you can go with minimal decor and florals are the perfect touch. To go with the Canada Day theme you could include national colours, native plants and textures and of course some maple leafs.  Designing on the Edge is our go-to for smartly designed themed florals. Maple Bacon Caesar Everyone has his or her own variation of the ultimate caesar but adding bacon to it is a...

BOOM Goes Out: Monogram Dinner x Design

If you’re design nerds like we are, you’ve been watching the news feeds of lucky attendees at DxD events in Vancouver and Toronto for years. Finally, Calgary got her chance to shine last night at ACAD, and shine she did. The Social Concierge (known in Calgary for events like Diner en Blanc and Packwood Grand) presented the first annual DxD with 6 incredible designers. Designers included were: Amanda Hamilton, Nyla Free Designs, Corea Sotropa Designs, Sally Healy Design, Connie Young Design, Alykhan Velji Designs, Uniquities, and ID Bohemia. “Monogram Dinner by Design brings together internationally celebrated designers and local talent to create three-dimensional dining installations that awe, inspire and delight. These extraordinary dining environments — from the lavish and romantic to the outrageous and whimsical — set the stage for two days of fun and fascination.”  – Website Those tables tho… @dinnerxdesign @acadexperience #yycliving #socialites #creative #design #inspiring #art @jenntait @terisalazar @lbarbetti #dxdcgy #dinnerxdesign A photo posted by Al Farrell (@naveed7) on Jun 11, 2015 at 10:27pm PDT   The reveal of the intricate and innovative dinner-scapes took place last night with a vibrant cocktail party. Tonight, the celebration will continue with an exclusive dinner. Each table will host 10 guests for a truly special dinner experience. The evening supported ACAD and Contemporary Calgary – two incredibly worthy artistic institutions – but the real winners were the designers. We are a blessed city to be surrounded by this much creative talent.       This evening. How Etsy Helps Me Host

(Derek is on vacation and I was thrilled when he asked me to be a guest contributor. So let me introduce myself, my name is Sommer Smith and I am the Sales and Marketing Manager at Boom Goes The Drum) I am not an expert designer, a DIY aficionado, or a professional chef, but I love to entertain in my home and I can make a mean cocktail (I have the trophy to prove it!). But thankfully in my line of work I have been surrounded by experts in all things food, floral, digital art, design and events; basically masters of creating amazing guest experiences. So on the weekends I enjoy taking the things I have learned from my expert colleagues and applying them to my modest and comparatively small-scaled dinner parties. Recently, I needed to up my game. A dear friend is expecting twins and I will be hosting her baby shower. To make it high stakes, this same friend hosted my baby shower and it BLEW MY MIND. I have to nail this. For months I have been planning and admittedly have started and stopped many themes.  I blame this on blogs like PoppyTalk, Vintage Revivals, and Rifle Paper Co. for sharing irresistible ideas . My challenge is always execution – financially and visually. My usual budget is minimal, but my aspirations are high. I need to get creative when it comes to bringing my vision to life and keeping my credit card from going bananas.   The source I always go back to is Etsy. For those who are not familiar, “Etsy is a marketplace where...

Design in Review: Mediterranean Summer Dinner, as featured in Luxe

I am all for traditional summer table settings, gingham and I are basically best friends. But sometimes you have to be inspired by far away places and the unexpected.   And that is exactly what happened when we collaborated with Sarah Mayerson Design and Fuller Edge Photography for our Provencale feature in Luxe by Calgary Bride’s 2014 Inspiration Issue. I will be honest this came together quick, last minute, and as I was unearthing treasures at Crate & Barrel. But for design projects like this the discovery is what brings out the best results.  There is no time to second guess, just go with your gut design instinct.  This table came together as an apologetically approachable gathering place. Inspired by the simple pleasure of breaking bread with loved ones. We contrasted high end service ware with rustic elements like the nautical textiles, a rich earthy colour palate, old world glassware, organic centerpieces, terrariums and a fresh fish (looks divine, smell is acquired). Edibles were used in place of the typical florals and the simple shapes and textures against the planks of weathered antique wood are reminiscent of a day at the beach. What really gets me excited is sourcing decor elements from wide range of suppliers Red Events Design Inc., Great Event Rentals, Crate & Barrel, And Uniquites Architectural Antiques to make a cohesive look and tone.  Creating a modern Mediterranean landscape that was authentic came down to the details, the snail shell against the striped napkin is my favourite (We decided that this last minute addition was like the earrings on the look).     Photography & Location: Fuller...
