#BoomGoesOut: Make Fashion 2017

#BoomGoesOut: Make Fashion 2017

The sixth annual Make Fashion show took place at Telus Spark, debuting the work of some of Canada’s premier minds in wearable tech. An apt venue for a runway show dedicated to exploring the ways clothing can interact with modern technology, hundreds of Calgarian’s filled the building, all clamouring to see the future of fashionable technology.     Boom enjoyed a VIP tour of the venue, sneaking behind the proverbial curtain (by invitation, of course) to watch the swath of designers, make up artists and hair stylists buzz around models, carefully adjusting glowing skirts and visual-projection hats. Afterwards, there were drinks and a few bites until we were called to our seats by the sudden radiating glow of the runway, signalling the show’s imminent beginning.       Skirts that glowed like compasses, indicating true north, hats that projected flowery images onto the wearers chest, and head pieces that pulsed with the model’s heartbeat were all evident at this year’s show. Truly delightful, ever surprising, and always entertaining, Make Fashion can tip their LED-filled hats to another successful event. For more information on Make Fashion, click...
LOOK2016: What You NEED to Know

LOOK2016: What You NEED to Know

It might be an understatement to say that Contemporary Calgary is having a moment. Earlier this year they announced that for the 2016 instalment of their award-winning, nationally-hailed event series “LOOK”, they would bring back two favourites from 2015: New Yorker staff writer, Adam Gopnik, and crowd-rousing auctioneer Stephen Ranger. As a stunning addition to this roster, the incomparable performer and art champion Steve Martin was also announced. As a proponent of contemporary art and a particular fan of that which is of the Canadian bent, Mr. Martin will participate in a can’t-be-missed conversation about the art of our times.   As if this wasn’t impressive enough, Contemporary Calgary has just announced that #LOOK2016 will be hosted by Lainey Lui. Lainey is an etalk Senior Correspondent, currently one of the leadings ladies on CTV’s The Social, and scribe of the immensely popular celebrity gossip blog, Lainey Gossip. As host for LOOK2016, she is sure to provide some entertaining commentary.     The final pièce de résistance to this line up, comes in the form of acclaimed Chef Steve Smee, currently the Chef/Owner of Ten Foot Henry (previously: UNA Pizza, Ox & Angela and Mercato), will be creating an ‘artistically-inspired’ menu as part of a one-night-only pop-up restaurant for VIP+Dinner level ticket holders. VIP+Dinner ticket holders will be treated to an intimate keynote address by special guest Adam Gopnik.     So there you have it. It appears it’s Contemporary Calgary’s world, and we just live in it. Boom Goes Out: Dinner x Design 2016

Last night, 500 guests gathered at ACAD to celebrate design and the designers whose chops are putting Calgary on the map. Dinner x Design came to town this week, giving 9 designers/agencies the chance to create unique table-scapes that demonstrate their creativity and personality. The event concludes this evening with a special dining event that invites guests to enjoy the tables and a meal with the people who created it. Funds raised will support Contemporary Calgary and ACAD. Bravo #Calgary – the work in this room is outstanding. These are just a few peaks, more tomorrow! #dxdyyc #dxdcgy #dinnerxdesign #yyc #yycdesign #yycevents A video posted by Boom Goes The Drum (@boomgoesthedrum) on Jun 2, 2016 at 9:58pm PDT Present at the event were: Alykhan Velji Design ID Bohemia WW Design Studio Sarah Ward Interiors e=mc2 events LeAnne Bunnell Interioros Nyla Free Designs Corea Satropa Designs Amanda Hamilton Design Rochelle Cote Design There were also drinks and treats throughout the event, and lots of fashionable friends! A warm room filled with eye candy.  Spoke with one designer who said that they approached this event with complete freedom creatively. She said she took the opportunity to create something just for them – no clients or briefs or restrictions. We loved that. How rare is it to be given a stage to express whatever story it is you want to tell to room full of people who want to listen. Bravo!  Tonight, Boom’s Derek Macdonald will join Amanda Hamilton (Amanda Hamilton Design) at her table – a modern, Calgary-centric souk – to take part in a discussion the love affair between art, design,...

Boom Goes Out: Sneak Peek of ChefBar’s The Slaughter House

Boom Goes Out: Sneak Peek of ChefBar’s The Slaughter House

You’re only as good as the food you eat and the company you keep, and if last night was any indication, then we are divine. Under warm lights and the watchful, lychee eyes of a watermelon-skull-turned-punch-bowl, the BOOM team met up with PR mogul Alex Kingcott, stylist Leah Van Loon, and the curator of the evening, blogger, stylist, entrepreneur, and man-about-town, Vincent Law. The purpose of the evening? To taste ChefBar’s Halloween menu, as prepared by their head chef, Shawn Desauliers, for the restaurant’s transformation on Halloween night into The Slaughter House.  As event designers (and theme addicts) we were delighted by the demonic dishes and creepy concoctions crafted by Chef Desauliers and his staff. We enjoyed “brain fluid” cocktails (refreshing notes of watermelon, lime, and a kick of tequila), lemon quinoa salad (in tiny, jack-o-lantern style oranges) and drool-worthy sriracha pork belly (under a “spider web” of black garlic). After dinner, and a mountain of gourmet, browned-to-your-taste s’mores (nick named the ‘”s’mores-pocalypse” by Vincent), Chef Desauliers took us downstairs for a tour of the Gerry Thomas Gallery, catered exclusively by ChefBar. Clean lines, simple aesthetic, and a built-in bar make this a welcome addition to Calgary’s list of modern event spaces.   Deciding to retire from his position as the executive chef at the Fairmont, Chef Shawn Desauliers decided to open a restaurant in Calgary’s bustling centre that would reflect the type of cooking he enjoyed making at home; simple dishes, made with quality ingredients, all put together with the chef’s unique style. While the food and hand-crafted cocktails are obviously a focus for ChefBar, the restaurant also...
