This past Saturday, May 14, marked the Youth Singers of Calgary‘s 30th anniversary. The Boom team was delighted to help celebrate this occasion at the Jubliee Auditorium, and to assist in bringing together over a thousand Calgarian supporters of youth and the arts.
Thirty years ago, music, arts, and education graduate Shirley Penner realized that, while Calgary was full of talented, creative young people, their outlets- particularly those of the musical bent- were limited. Through Shirley’s passion and determination, and along with the support of Darlene Dusevic, Tricia Penner, and many other volunteers, Youth Singers was born. “Together they developed a unique performing arts organization; providing an opportunity for young people to express themselves onstage through music, dance and theatre. Their commitment to music, excellence in teaching and a strong team approach has sustained the organization to the present day.”
The anniversary included a a pre-event cocktail (and mocktail) hour, where guests explored the auditorium, enjoyed bites by Hotel Arts, and bid on over a dozen auction items, including multiple all-inclusive vacation packages.
Soon attendees were ushered into the auditorium, which would feature multiple stunningly lit, choreographed, and performed numbers by the Youth Singers and their various chapters. Mayor Naheed Nenshi, a very vocal supporter of the arts, was present for the performance, and took a moment before the show to comment on the powerful contribution the dedicated volunteers give every day to ensure organizations like the Youth Singers of Calgary can thrive in our community.
After the performance concluded to a well deserved standing ovation, over a thousand guests made their way back into foyer to enjoy a complimentary candy bar and passed desserts, and to claim their auction items. As the evening closed, it was clear by the smiling faces of the performers and their families (and fans!) that the anniversary had been a success, and that the Calgary Youth Singers will continue to delight Calgarian’s for decades to come.
