Event In Review: CINCO2015

After many years of collaboration, Contemporary Calgary has emerged and has set it’s sights on establishing Calgary as significant destination for contemporary art. Their work will contribute to elevating Calgary even further as a global city of choice. The organization will soon close the doors of one of their current spaces on Stephen Avenue, and begin moving into the Centennial Planetarium. In preparation for the much-anticipated move, last night  CINCO2015, a Cinco de Mayo party served as Contemporary Calgary’s final farewell event to their Stephen Ave location.

BOOM was so thrilled to be a part of this event!

Contemporary Calgary “…believe[s] in the power of art that enlightens, invigorates, educates and communicates”, and that ideology was very present throughout the evening. During the event guests were delighted with various performances and entertainers, from a live mariachi troop, to a stunning salsa demonstration that ended with full-costumed luchadores teasing guests onto the dance floor.

Calgarians alway rise to the occasion when it comes to themes, and it was impossible not to admire the incredible splashes of colour and vibrant fascinators bedecking guests as they made their way through the three floors of the gallery.

While attendees enjoyed a variety of Mexican-inspired cocktails and canapés provided by Barcelona Tavern, they had the opportunity to bid on a number of items in a silent auction. Travel vouchers, luxurious wine and spirit packages, and a number of contemporary art pieces were all available for bidding.

The event was a wildly entertaining success as a fundraiser for Contemporary Calgary as they prepare for the next step in their cultural evolution. It was a perfect of mix of nostalgia and fresh energy. With a tip of the sombrero to the past, we join Contemporary Calgary in looking forward to the future, and celebrating again in their new home at LOOK2015, coming this fall.

See you there, Calgary!
