Supporting Local this Holiday Season – YYC

Give where you Live this Year

There’s nothing we can say about 2020 that hasn’t been said (and to be honest, we’re getting pretty tired of hearing “unprecedented” “pivot” and “iterate”). So rather than repeat the obvious and talk about what a wild year it’s been, we wanted to look at how we can all make 2020 just a tiny bit better.

The holidays are coming and, like most things this year, they may be a little different for you and your loved ones. One thing that doesn’t have to change, however, is using your holiday spirit (and wallet) to do a little good in your community. Shopping local and supporting businesses in your neighbourhood this season keeps our communities strong and vibrant, and helps make sure they can weather 2020 and beyond. Below are some gift ideas that you can feel good about giving, and know your loved ones will feel good receiving.

For your foodie friend

Family owned and operated Fork and Farm Catered Events  started offering “Covid Catering” at the beginning of the pandemic, and since then their hand-crafted, locally sourced meal kits have quickly gained a cult following. This holiday season they’re offering a “Festive Dinner” package; a five course meal you and your family can just pop in the oven to heat up and enjoy. Bonus? For every dinner they sell they will be donating a non perishable food package to a local food bank.

For your friend who’s been missing a cold one

Cabin Brewing is locally owned and has been in business since 2018. With a great variety of seasonal and “core” beers, getting a gift card for your friend who loves their suds is a no brainer. Enjoy some beverages at home or head over to “The Cabin” for a socially distanced cheers!

For your friend with the big heart

Kids Up Front is a Canadian charity that started here in Calgary that believes all kids, regardless of economic status, should have access to enriching and exciting experiences such as sporting, arts, and cultural events, creating a more inclusive community for children and youth to grow up in. 2020 has been a hard year for families who rely on Kids Up Front’s programming, and a donation with a loved one’s name on it could be just the ticket (pun intended).

For your friend with the green thumb

If you don’t already own a little (or maybe not so little) green friend from Plant in Inglewood, then can you really call yourself a Calgarian? Plant has been bringing Calgarians incredible and unique plants, flower arrangements, and more, since 2014. As we head into Calgary’s winter months, a little spot of leafy green could be just the thing to brighten your loved one’s day.
